Can the water get too high?
Yes & No - the water can get too high for rafting certain sections of the Arkansas River. When flows in the Royal Gorge exceed 3,200 cubic feet per second (CFS), it becomes too intense to safely navigate. In these cases, we switch Royal Gorge trips to Bighorn Sheep Canyon, which offers thrilling Class III-IV rapids at high flows. If Bighorn Sheep Canyon also becomes too high, we adjust further by moving trips to the Upper Bighorn Sheep Canyon. These adjustments ensure that every trip remains exciting yet appropriate for all guests, with safety as our top priority.
At Royal Gorge Rafting, we are dedicated to tailoring each adventure to match river conditions, providing a thrilling and memorable experience while keeping safety at the forefront.
(High Water / Too High / High Water )
When Does High Water Occur?
High water on the Arkansas River, where Royal Gorge Rafting operates, typically occurs from late May through late June, peaking around mid-June. During this time, water levels often exceed 3,200 CFS, creating big waves and swift currents for thrilling rafting. When flows become too high in the Royal Gorge, trips are switched to Bighorn Sheep Canyon for a comparable but safer adventure. If Bighorn also becomes too intense, trips are moved to Upper Bighorn Sheep Canyon to ensure safety while maintaining excitement.
In addition, Royal Gorge Rafting prepares for these conditions, ensuring thrilling and unforgettable adventures with professional kayak support 🚣♀️💪.
